The HIV&AIDS Initiative is one of Saddleback Church’s
Signature Issues because we care deeply about those who are infected and affected
by HIV and AIDS. Everyone can play a role in serving those living with HIV and
AIDS, and we believe the local church is uniquely able to offer wholistic care,
compassion, and real solutions for those living with the virus.
Listen here to the story of Kay Warren, founder of the
HIV&AIDS Initiative, as she describes how God got her attention to care
about those living with HIV:
Hi I’m Kay Warren and
I want to talk to you about something that’s become important to me. A few
years ago I was reading a magazine and saw a story about HIV & AIDS in
Africa. Until that moment I didn’t care about HIV & AIDS. To be honest I
wasn’t even sure what it was. But the article said that millions of people were
infected with in incurable deadly virus and millions of children were being
orphaned because of it.
That day I saw the
suffering of those living with HIV & AIDS for the first time. I wondered
how it would feel to have my family abandon me because they were afraid they
would catch my illness. Or what it would be like to be a child and have my mom
and dad die leaving me to grow up alone. Suddenly their pain became my pain,
and it changed me forever.
